Those of us who happen to be long-time Joss Whedon fans have seen this before. He premieres a show on Fox with an intelligent premise and what seems to be a great cult following, and before the show hits its stride, Fox pulls the plug. I know I speak for a lot of fans when I say that seven years later, the Firefly wound still hasn’t healed. So with most people knowing that Dollhouse was going into its second season with not much more than a wing and a prayer, there’s only one question left to ask.
WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?
The premiere brought in mediocre ratings, far less than what was expected of the show, and Friday’s episode, Instinct, only managed 0.8/3 with adults 18-49 and averaged only 2.1 million viewers. (source) Dollhouse only barely edged out a rerun of America’s Next Top Model on the CW and was even beaten by the cable premiere of Stargate Universe on SyFy, which averaged 2.35 million viewers. So what do all these numbers mean? Nothing good. It means Fox is coming in LAST in the ratings with a show that they were on the fence with renewing in the first place. And it means that there’s a big possibility of Dollhouse being pulled off of the air in the next few weeks.
I don’t know about everyone else, but I think Dollhouse has a lot of potential. Season 1 showed us that the show may have a bit of a slow start with its plot arcs, but once the pieces are firmly into place, Dollhouse is fantastic and compelling television. Even the promos for next week’s episode have me hopeful for the creative future of the show, if only because we’re going to get another episode that showcases Enver Gjokaj’s acting chops.
Unless something changes pretty quickly, there’s a possiblilty that next week’s episode could be the last one we get to see. That means no Summer Glau, no resolution of Whiskey’s plotline, no more Felicia Day and the future Dollhouse world that we saw in Epitaph One, and not even the possibility of more Alpha. Another great Joss Whedon show will become a victim of Fox Friday nights.
