With the second season of HBO’s break-out hit True Blood quickly coming to a close (this Sunday will mark the penultimate episode this year), the pressure’s on Alan Ball and his writers to top themselves every week, and this week, they managed it both flawlessly and hilariously.
Spoilers for “New World in my View” to follow.
Last night’s episode was, in my opinion, the best of the season. With a blend of horror, comedy and suspense, there wasn’t a moment where I felt bored or felt like I was just waiting for the next scene to start. Though some might argue that it was simply a filler episode (not much happened to push the plot forward, with the exception of Sookie’s discovery of her mysterious new ability), I thought the episode was probably the most satisfying of the season.
Jason Stackhouse was badass, Sookie wasn’t boring, Rutina Wesley as Tara was amazing to watch, and Andy, with his persistence on keeping a bottle in his hand for almost the entire episode, was simply hilarious. While True Blood has had it’s comedic moments this season (Bill and his recycling habits come to mind first), I’ve never seen it as a particularly funny show. But last night, I was in stitches the entire time.
Between Andy’s constant drunkenness, Jason’s hilarity (am I the only one who cried ‘thank you’ when he asked what the hell was wrong with everyone’s eyes?), and Hoyt’s mama playing Wii, I was crying with laughter for most of the episode.
But the humor in last night’s True Blood wasn’t the only positive thing about it. We’re finally seeing the light at the end of the Maryanne tunnel. The storyline has dragged on since last season, and frankly, I’m ready for her to die or move on. Were this any other show, I’d be worried about how they’re going to wrap everything up in just two weeks, but True Blood has mastered the art of cramming weeks worth of plot into one episode. I’m betting that the next two weeks will be just like last night: completely action packed.
A few more thoughts on “New World in my View”:
*I absolutely can’t wait for Andy to have his day. Maybe it would be a little mean for him to gloat to the entire town, but after they way they’ve been writing him off as an ignorant drunk all season, he totally deserves to be able to.
*I sincerely hope that Jessica and Hoyt aren’t over because of what happened with his mother. They’ve been one of my favorite things about the season.
*Thank God we’ll finally get to see Rachel Evan Wood next week. They’ve been hyping her up since the season started and it’s been a long wait.
*Glad the Sookie and Eric scene turned out to be a dream, if only because I’d hate to think that Eric goes to the trouble of taking his shirt off just to cry.
*Lafayette was amazing this week, if only for his amazing hand gestures and his line about he and God seeing other people.
*Second week in a row the show has brought me to tears. As horrible as Tara’s mom has been to her over the years, I’m hoping they’ll work it out, at least for a little while.
*Am I the only one who caught one of the guys in the mob in Merlotte’s feeding another guy a peanut? Hilarious.
And in case you missed it last night, here’s the promo for next week’s episode, “Frenzy”.
True Blood airs Sundays on HBO at 10/9C.
